Buffalo Watch 2012
Mark your calendar for May 26th from 10:00-5:00.

It is our 14th annual Buffalo Watch.  It is by far our busiest day of the year, and it’s also a fund raiser for the Whitehouse Rescue Squad.  Come see the newborn calves frolicking in the pastures up close. We open up the alleys in between the pastures to give you the best possible view. It is a great opportunity for your whole family to enjoy life on the farm for a day.  Parking, admission, and walking tours are free.  There are also wagon rides, concessions, and kids’ activities that benefit the Squad.  The workshop will also be filled with a merchant’s bazaar to showcase the local talents.  Most of the farm is wheelchair accessible.  We’d love to see you there!

Farm News

Environmental Improvements
2012 is a year of great excitement for the farm.  We have embarked on an ambitious ecological project.  With participation from NJ Audubon, Fish and Wildlife Service, and Natural Resource Conservation Service, we will be establishing a wildlife habitat along Woodschurch Road.  This 2 acre plot will consist of a pond and lowland grasses.  We have broken ground on it and expect to be finishing in the late summer.
This project will not only benefit the wildlife, but it will also be improving the environment.  The pond will slow down the water flow, limiting erosion.  The impurities from the runoff will be filtered by the lowland grasses, emitting cleaner water into the rivers downstream.  And, most importantly, it will improve the aesthetics of the farm by turning a muddy, weedy pasture into a haven for water fowl and amphibians.

Garden Party
Readington River Farm  has decided to lend a hand and strengthen its community involvement by hosting a CSA garden to benefit the Stanton Reformed Church.  With the help of the congregation, and the guidance of our new friend and mentor, Lindsay Troyer, the garden will help raise funds for the church and feed the families around us.  In its first year, only one of its four acres is being planted.  Once the garden proves its worth, we hope to build upon it to be a fully operational sourced of all types of produce.  This is another way that the farm can be used to make the families in our neighborhood proud of where they live.
