Farm
News:
Springtime
is finally here! That means it’s time to get
back to some good hard work on the farm. The 44 bison cows are doing
their part gestating that last trimester. We’re looking forward
to meeting the new crop of calves. The first arrival should be soon
after Easter, continuing though all of May, and finishing up around
summer solstice. This is our most popular time of year for visitors.
If you are just driving past the farm, come on down and take a few
minutes to welcome the babies into the world. Passers-by
are always welcome, even when the store is closed.
We're
knee deep in the garden! The
4-acre irrigated plot was dressed with lots of manure and eggshells
to bolster the already rich soil. Soon, we’ll be planting
the pick-your-own garden full of vegetables like
tomatoes, eggplant, sweet corn, peppers, and squash. Later, we’ll
plant the pumpkins so they’ll be right on time for hay rides
this fall.
We’re
helping out the needy! We
have also been active in helping out the needy with our garden.
We’ve partnered with America’s Grow-A-Row where volunteers
come in and manage their area to help out in our collective effort
to give aid to the less fortunate. We’re also continuing our
partnership with Farmers Against Hunger, where the gleanings take
all our unsold vegetables to area food pantries. The community service
aspect of our operation is a new source of pride we have in our
farm, and we hope that we can make a small difference toward the
betterment of Hunterdon County. Erick is also working to help out
the temporarily unlucky by setting aside a day to give the newly
unemployed citizens of Hunterdon a moment of assistance by hosting
a day of pick-your-own specifically to their benefit. We hope to
get other farms involved, and give agriculture a chance to support
the community as we have been supported by the community all these
years.

Don't Miss This!
Buffalo Watch 2009 Saturday, May 23 -10:00 to 5:00
It’s
our biggest day of the year. This is a fund raising event to benefit
the Whitehouse Rescue Squad. We open up the alleys in between the
pastures to give our visitors ample access to the view of our herds.
Calving season will be in full swing, and chances of seeing a live
birth are optimal, but not guaranteed (you’d be surprised
at how may people ask where the calf is being born). The squad members
cook up lunch, give wagon rides, and provide all sorts of amusements.
